How to Care for Atopic Skin

Atopic dermatitis is a skin condition that affects many babies from their first months of life. Unfortunately, there is no cure for it, but with a proper care routine, we can minimize discomfort.

This inflammatory disease manifests in episodes or flare-ups, with its most characteristic symptoms being dryness, redness, intense itching, and the appearance of eczema on the skin. The first signs usually appear around two or three months of age and, in most cases, persist throughout the first five years. Flare-ups are very common on infants' faces, particularly around the mouth and cheeks. As feeding habits change or as they start touching objects, areas like the hands or the folds of the limbs—elbows, knees, ankles, or wrists—become critical zones to monitor.

The steps to prevent or avoid worsening the symptoms of dermatitis are not too different from a meticulous skincare routine. As always, the key lies in keeping the skin clean and hydrated.

Prevention. First, it’s important to identify the triggers of flare-ups. Not everyone with atopic dermatitis has an allergic basis, but it’s advisable to conduct tests to rule it out. The baby could be allergic to dust, pollen, pet hair, or even certain foods. Milk, eggs, and nuts are often the most allergenic.

Awareness. Sometimes the itching is so intense that some children end up causing wounds. It’s crucial to teach older children not to scratch, to show them how to gently apply a soothing cream with soft strokes, and to keep their nails short and clean.

Hygiene. Baths are much more soothing than showers, especially if oil is added to the water to alleviate irritation and soften the skin. Daily hygiene should avoid sponges and even soap. For the most sensitive areas, an oatmeal preparation or a gentle soap with emollients like olive oil and calming agents such as chamomile—like Olivolea Bath Gel—is sufficient. After bathing, drying should be done very carefully, followed by the application of a specific moisturizing cream. If the skin is very dry, it can be applied twice a day. Sometimes corticosteroid creams are used to treat eczema, but caution is needed as overuse can lead to skin atrophy. Olivolea Regenerating Balm, with 25% olive oil and calming actives, is the most suitable natural solution.

Hydration. It is crucial to maintain a hydration routine year-round, but especially now in summer. Chlorine from pools can severely dry the skin, while for some children, seawater can cause increased itching. Avoiding sudden temperature changes, dressing them in light cotton clothing, and always having a moisturizer on hand are key. Olivolea Body Moisturizer is perfect for daily use.
