Baby's skin
Sensitive and delicate, a newborn's skin needs special care to keep it healthy.
A newborn's skin is its protective layer against aggression and infection and needs special care to keep it healthy. Its epidermis is very thin - up to 60% thinner than that of an adult - and its defence mechanisms are poorly developed. It is permeable to substances that can be harmful to its health and prone to heat and water loss. We need to take proper care of it, although we should not become obsessed if it shows redness, small cracks or peeling. We can provide the baby with the well-being it deserves by taking a series of precautions.
The diaper. The use of diapers, continuous rubbing and humidity can cause skin irritation and the appearance of dermatitis. First of all, we must pay attention to their composition and choose disposable diapers with organic fibers, hypoallergenic and very absorbent. Changing diapers is one of the biggest concerns for mothers and we must do it almost immediately. Keeping them clean and dry is the first step to avoid possible diaper rash. The use of alcohol wipes should be ruled out, because they can irritate the baby even more. The skin in this area is thinner and more delicate, so The creams we use should contain active ingredients with a soothing and healing effect, and which also deeply moisturise and nourish the skin. Protecting your baby's bottom well is the best way to avoid infections and irritations.
Bathing. Bathing your baby every day is not mandatory and until your baby gets used to it, it can be very annoying. It is very important that the water is not too cold or too hot, but at the same temperature as your baby's body temperature, and that you clean the diaper area, the folds of the legs, and the fingers and toes very carefully. Between five and ten minutes is enough time. You can use hypoallergenic soap or just water and when you finish, wrap your baby in a cotton towel and dry gently, without rubbing. A massage with a thin layer of moisturizing cream will help keep your baby's skin soft and resistant after bathing . Always choose formulas without perfumes, with natural ingredients, which are respectful of extremely delicate skin. In fact, using the same cream as your baby is a great idea, since mother and child are in constant contact.
Clothing. Cotton or linen garments encourage perspiration and are much more skin-friendly. Babies can be sensitive to substances found in new clothes or to soap residue that may remain after washing. To prevent possible irritation, we only need to follow a few small steps such as washing all their clothes before using them, preferably separately and always with special detergents for children.
The heat. Sudden changes in temperature or overdressing them should be avoided. Excessive heat can cause sweating, a skin rash caused by the blockage of sweat glands. On the other hand, walks in the park will fill them with vitality, but we must avoid direct exposure to the sun as they have less capacity to protect themselves from solar radiation.
