I will begin by defining what is known as dermatological cosmetics. A dermatological cosmetic is one that provides effective solutions for the wide variety of skin conditions. Creams are perhaps the most commonly used pharmaceutical form for external medication in dermatology and are the most used cosmetic worldwide, as they consist of a lipid base that easily integrates active ingredients and vehicles into their composition. It is an evanescent preparation that allows good penetration of active agents, is refreshing, and non-occlusive, as it allows for skin transpiration. They appear as a single phase, are aesthetically elegant, pleasant, and dermatologically well-accepted.
The excipients generally used in the preparation of magistral formulas can basically be of three types: fats (whether liquid, viscous, or solid, such as emollients from olive oil, petroleum jelly, lanolin, shea butter...), powders (which are refreshing, desiccating, and decongesting, the most used are talc, zinc oxide, kaolin...), and liquids (mainly water and alcohol). These excipients can be used individually or mixed together to obtain cosmetic bases.
