Los superalimentos que nos ayudan a proteger nuestra salud

Superfoods that help us protect our health.

If we want to protect our health, we must correct our lifestyle and eating habits. One way to do this is by increasing the consumption of so-called "Superfoods," which contribute to improving our quality of life and help the body defend against diseases. However, the most important thing is that these foods are part of a varied, balanced, and healthy diet.

All foods have some nutritional value, but there is a class of foods that are essential and beneficial for health, containing certain properties that are especially advantageous: the so-called superfoods. They are rich in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants (vitamins A and E and beta-carotene), and phytonutrients, which help eliminate toxins and waste from the body, thus protecting it from diseases.

A superfood is never processed and should preferably be consumed raw to avoid the loss of these nutrients.

There is a group of superfoods that are more familiar to us, such as leafy greens, legumes, nuts, salmon, eggs, and there is another category of more unusual superfoods that could even be described as "exotic." I will describe several from each category, starting with the most important superfood for me, which should be part of our diet every day in moderation: our "liquid gold.

Extra virgin olive oil, one of the quintessential and very healthy foods. Besides lowering bad cholesterol and protecting the body from cardiovascular diseases, it has been shown to help reduce the development of breast cancer. Additionally, it is one of the best antioxidants that we should incorporate into our daily diet.

Cocoa, one of the most delicious foods for caring for our body and maintaining good health. It is rich in antioxidants (which help prevent aging and the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer) and essential fatty acids that keep the central nervous system healthy and are essential for the formation of certain hormones. The more cocoa it contains, the richer it is in antioxidants and fiber.

Quinoa is a pseudocereal, but it resembles legumes. It provides high-quality protein and is also very rich in easily digestible fiber. The fiber and protein it provides are better than those in legumes. This contributes to good intestinal health, preventing diseases such as colon cancer.

Chia seeds are considered another superfood due to their high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-3, fiber, and antioxidants.

Camu camu is a tree native to the Amazon rainforest, producing fruits rich in vitamin C. It is important for functions related to collagen formation, skin health, proper iron absorption, and the optimal formation of our bones and blood vessels.

Lucuma is a fruit tree of Andean origin and helps increase hemoglobin levels in the blood due to its iron content. Its high levels of vitamins B1, B2, and B3 stimulate the proper functioning of the nervous system, among other benefits, making it a good complement against depression and fatigue.

Purple-colored foods contain anthocyanin, a flavonoid that gives them their hue. They are very rich in antioxidants, so their consumption helps prevent cardiovascular and digestive problems, provides a protective effect against certain types of cancer, improves memory, enhances urinary system function, and helps delay the aging process. More exotic examples include Açai, though this group also includes beets, eggplant, blueberries, red cabbage, plums, and more.

Chlorophyll, found in green foods like kale, spinach, broccoli, and marine vegetables like algae, is low in calories and rich in nutrients like zinc, iron, and calcium, which are essential for proper tissue oxygenation.

Fermented products like kimchi, yogurt, and sauerkraut will become staples of daily nutrition. They contain healthy bacteria that help maintain intestinal flora health. They also have a high content of vitamin C.

Avocados, due to their carotenoid, vitamin E, and lutein content, help the proper functioning of the body thanks to the monounsaturated fatty acids, improving the lipid profile.

But remember, the best way to get the full spectrum of nutrients is through a varied diet that includes fruits and vegetables along with other plant-based foods such as whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, with olive oil being one of the main plant-based fats included in our daily diet.

Enjoy the superfoods!
